Crunchyroll is a fantastic streaming platform for anime, with many free titles available. Unfortunately, Crunchyroll doesn’t offer Japanese subtitles, which makes it difficult for Japanese learners to use the platform effectively. But, there is another option. With the Substital extension, you can add subtitles to any video on Crunchyroll. To do so, first, go to the Chrome Web Store page for the Substital extension.
Next, you need to download subtitles for the video you want to add subtitles to. You can find subtitles for most Anime at Kitsunekko, just click on the series you want subtitles for. Keep in mind that these are community-contributed subtitles, so they aren’t always organized very well. It may take a little searching to find what you are looking for. You can also use Ctrl + F to search the page for a specific title.
After you click on a series, you will see a list of files like the one below. You need to create an account and sign in to download any files. Once you are signed in, click on an individual file to download it, or click on “download all files” to download subtitles for the entire series. Only download .srt or .zip files, since Substital only supports those formats.
After you download your subtitles and have Substital installed, go to Crunchyroll and click on the video you want to watch. Next, click on the Substital extension at the top of your screen. It should say that it found 1 video on this page. Click on the video link, it shows in the extension.
Now it will ask you to upload your subtitle file. Use the file you downloaded earlier from Kitsunekko.
To access the Substital menu, click on the “S” in the bottom right corner of the video. You change the subtitle track by clicking “select subtitles.”
To synchronize the subtitle track to the video, use the synchronization slider to speed it up or slow it down.
